BOLERO - SIRE OF BORDEAUX
Bolero has become known as a symbol for the modern riding horse and is a classic example of the refining influence the Throroughbred has had on the modern Hanoverian. Although three-quarter Thoroughbred himself, he retained the quality and movement of his Hanoverian ancestors. His sire, Black Sky xx was known for producing highly rideable dressage horses. His dam, Baroness was a daughter of the famous Bleep xx, who was unusually large framed for a Thoroughbred.

Bolero stood at stud for only nine years yet has to his credit 51 approved stallions, 73 States Premium mares and numerous top dressage horses. He continues to influence the international dressage rings through his offspring who include champion dressage horses such as Baryshnikov, Beauvalais, Bini Bo, Bismark, Boccaccio and Brentano I as well as the champion stallions Brentano II, 2003 Hanoverian Stallion of the Year, and Buenos Aires.

Bolero's line continues to produce performers in upper level dressage with three horses currently in the World Breeding Federation for Sport Horses (WDFSH) top 25 including the full brother of Brentina, Barclay II and the 4th placing Olympic champion Beauvalais. Others on the list include Breitling W, Bonaparte 67, Burlington W and on the dam side of Don Bolero.

Bolero has been called a guarantee for...”Easy to ride horses of elegant type and with a special aptitude for dressage.” (A. Hengst Deutschlands) His line consistantly produces horses with good shoulders and withers, modern toplines and elastic action. Although Bolero died early, he ranked third (1990) in national dressage ranking of his age group.
THE HANOVERIAN B-LINE
Bolero by Black Sky xx was the founding sire of a new B-Line in the 1990's. He was a three-quarter Thoroughbred stallion whose breeding career was short lived at his early death of twelve years of age. He had a profound impact in the Hannoverian breeding area in the 1980's.

His success as a sire of sires is reknown and his sons have been exported to numerous countries around the world. His offspring out of Grande, Argus and Duellant mares in particular were consistantly horses with good shoulders and withers, modern toplines and elastic action. His daughters consistently won at major shows and were awarded States Premium.

His offspring were known as the "Bolero Boom". From his first group of five sons to attend the Verden licensing, four were selected and his sons continued to excel throughout the 1980's. In 1986, the German Riding Horse National Championship was won by Boruschkin, later sold at the Verden auction for 110,000 DM. This success contiuned with further record auction prices. In 1986, the DLG Championship was won by the three-year-old Bolero daughter, Batumi.
WHY USE THE THOROUGHBRED IN A WARMBLOOD BREED?
"Reasons and Effects of Using Thoroughbreds in a Warmblood Breed to Improve Dressage and Jumping Marelines"
Dr. Jochen Wilkens, VhW Manager and Breeding Director - “The American Hanoverian” Winter 2005/2006.

How can we use Thoroughbreds to improve the warmblood breed? We do this by the careful selection of Thoroughbred Stallions to be used. The three reasons for using Thoroughbreds in a warmblood breed to improve dressage and jumping marelines are: 1.) the tendancy for warmbloods to become coarser and heavier over the generations, 2.) 80-90 percent of all riders are female, 3.) the need for charming, mobile and elegant horses which are long legged but not too heavy.

Refinement means improvement of energy, stamina and the ability to perform and stay sound. The Thoroughbred body leads to the refinement of the body and limbs, frequently with a good topline, (shoulders, withers, and croup.).

Says Wilkens, “We must select only suitable stallions and we must learn that breeding means thinking in generations. On the mother’s side we like to see Thoroughbred blood in the first to third generations.”

Noted Thoroughbred sires important to the Hanoverian development which are found in the pedigrees of Bridlewood Farm’s horses include: Augustinus xx (Fabuleux),Black Sky xx (Bordeaux, Donnerkeil, Wolkenglanz), Bleep xx (Bordeaux, Donnerkeil, Wolkenglanz), Cardinal xx (Guarantor), Ladykiller xx (Liandra), Lauries Crusador xx (SPS Laureen), Marcio xx (Werther's Brigitta) and Waidmannsdank xx (Werther's Brigitta).
BRENTANO II - ANOTHER FAMOUS SON OF BOLERO/GRANDE
Brentano II, was chosen as the 2003 Hanoverian Stallion of the Year by the German hanoverian Verband (VhW). Bordeaux shares the same pedigree (Bolero/Grande) as both Brentano I and Brentano II.

Brentano II was champion stallion at the stallion licensing in Verden 1985 and runner-up in the stallion performance test in 1986. He was also a successful Federal Championship competitor, and was trained up to Grand Prix level. He is by the famous sire Bolero, who was a foundation sire of very top class.
BRENTINA - INTERNATIONAL DRESSAGE STAR
Brentano II's most recognizable dressage offspring is the mare Brentina, owned by Peggy and Parry Thomas, and ridden by Debbie McDonald. Brentina was named 2005 Farnam/Platform USEF Horse of the Year by USEF members and equine media representatives from five finalists representing the best of the many USEF disciplines.

Brentina and McDonald led the United States to a silver medal finish at the 2002 World Equestrian Games in Jerez, Spain, and a team bronze medal at the 2004 Olympics in Athens, Greece. They placed third overall at the 2005 FEI World Cup Finals in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Debbie McDonald describes Brentina as "The most memorable horse I've ever ridden. She loves to come to work." Owner Peggy Thomas says, "Brentina's main atribute is her grace. Her relationship is so harmonious..."

Brentina's full brother Barclay II is on the World Breeding Federation for Sport Horses (WDFSH) top 25 list.
BRENTANO II - SIRE OF DRESSAGE CHAMPIONS
Bolero always passed on to his progeny nobility, excellent movements and a high talent for dressage. Brentano II is probably his best siring son. He has sired 16 approved sons and 88 States Premium mares. Like his father, Brentano II is a very rideable dressage horse and highly esteemed as a hereditary transmitter of rideability and rhythmic motions.

One of Brentano's successful offspring is the highly famous international dressage competitor Brentina ridden to Olympic success by Debbie McDonald. Brentano II is also the sire of Barclay, Olympic competitor with rider Swen Rothenberger, damsire of Poetin one of the most expensive dressage prospects to be sold at the German PSI International Auction (over $2,000,000)and Bona Dea II, who was Champion mare 2000 at the famous Hanoverian broodmare show, the prestigious Ratje-Niebuhr-Show.
GRANDE - PATERNAL GRANDSIRE OF BORDEAUX
Grande (Graf/SPS Duellfest/Duellant) stood at stud for a remarkable 25 years (1962-1987) and has left an indelible mark on the Hanoverian breed. Grande is ranked in the German Eternal Top 10 sire list. He was a very versatile sire, due in part to his own bloodlines: on the sire's side the jumping influence of Graf and on the dam's side the dressage influence of Duellant.

He sired more than 40 approved sons, the most famous of which are Garibaldi II, Graphit, Galsritter and Glander who went on to be influential sires in their own right. Both Grande and his own offspring were noted for producing horses which excelled in dressage and show jumping. Grande's line dominates the sport of dressage in Germany and abroad. He is the grandsire of several Olympic champions including Gifted, Grunox and Gigolo FRH.
THE G-LINE
The G-Line is reknown as the most important and famous producer of international performance horses in the world both in dressage and jumping. In dressage, these horses are household names: Gifted, Grundstein, Grunox, Gigalo, Graf George, Girogione and Goldstern. Grand Prix and Olympic jumping champions include Gladstone, Everest, Gaylord, Genius, Grand Plaisir, Grandeur and Top Gun.

Goldfisch II is the focus of the important horses of this line, primarily through his influential descendents Grande and Gotthard. The famous Grande, who was at stud for 25 years was noted for the performance success of his offspring. With Graf, by Goldfisch II from the jumping side and his Duellant mother, Grande combined the best in dressage and jumping bloodlines.

Three Grande sons achieved great fame as sires. Galsritter developed into a producer of jumpers of international class. Garibaldi II sired the U.S. dressage champion Gifted as well as many show jumpers and Graphit sired the well known dressage sires Grundstein I & II. Grundstein I competed very successfully at Grand Prix level and was the leading sire in the FN rankings among stallions in the top ten percent of their age group in both jumping and dressage from 1988-2000. Graphit also produced Grannus, a top jumping stallion with lifetime earnings of well over five million DM, who in turn produced seven Olympic hoses and more than 60 approved stallions including Graf Grannus, the 2004 Hanoverian Stallion of the Year.

Gotthard, in his time, was noted as the top sire of jumping champions. His noted sons include Fardestern, Gluckstern and Gluckspilz.
